WHAT WORKS FOR ME IN… Having A Strong Lobby Ministry For New Guests And/Or Returning Inactive Members

Marianne Carty (mmscarty@msn.com), Retired Pastor’s Wife, Yucaipa Seventh-day Adventist Church, (Southeastern CA Conf)

“One Sabbath the minister stressed in his sermon how the members needed to be friendlier and reach out to visitors. My sweet, conscientious mother-in-law, after church that day in the lobby, saw someone she didn’t recognize in her several-thousand-member church. Smilingly, she asked, “Are you visiting with us today?” “I am not!” the woman retorted. “I was a charter member here!” That almost put an end to her ‘outreach’. Personally, I find that reaching out to a person and saying, with a smile, “I haven’t had a chance to get acquainted with (or meet) you yet,” then giving my name, usually brings a friendly response and many times is the beginning of a great relationship.”
