Why Not Try This? …Give Someone a Piece of Literature

The last few weeks I’ve had a lot of fun giving out literature.

Here are three of my favorite kinds—

1. “16 Ways to Reduce Stress During The Workday”. In the Butte, Montana airport I gave one to a waitress. She looked at the title and said, “Wow, I really need this today.” As I boarded my plane I gave one each to three baggage handlers. One jokingly said, “We don’t need this. We get rid of all our stress throwing your bags around!” I’m glad I only had carryon luggage! At the end of a long flight I told the flight attendant on my way out, “You’ve done really well. But if you ever need it I think you’ll appreciate this,” as I handed her one. She laughed and said thanks. (Available at the ABC for $7.95 for a packet of 100)

2. $1,000,000 bills. On the back are quotations by famous wealthy people who tell how unhappy they are and some Bible verses telling how to have genuine happiness in Jesus. I like to leave them with my tip in restaurants. When I was making a deposit at my bank’s drive thru I told the teller she could put the $1,000,000 in any account she wanted, but to be sure to look at the back first. She said she would put it in her own account. (Available for about $5 for a packet of 20)

3. Old Primary Treasures and Little Friends. Many children’s Sabbath Schools have leftovers. I ask kids in our new neighborhood if they would like a free Christian story magazine. Most say yes. Also I have given out a lot in airports to parents traveling with children, explaining that I think it will keep the children occupied since it’s hard to travel with little kids. And of course I love to give it to trick-or-treaters when they come to our door on Halloween.

Satan is busy in this department of his work, scattering literature which is debasing the morals and poisoning the minds of the young. Infidel publications are scattered broadcast throughout the land. Why should not every member of the church be as deeply interested in sending forth publications that will elevate the minds of the people, and bring the truth directly before them? These papers and tracts are for the light of the world, and have often been instrumental in converting souls. Our publications are now sowing the gospel seed, and are instrumental in bringing as many souls to Christ as the preached word. Whole churches have been raised up as the result of their circulation. In this work every disciple of Christ can act a part. Let the leaflets and tracts, the papers and books, go in every direction. Carry with you, wherever you go, a package of select tracts, which you can hand out as you have opportunity. Sell what you can, and lend or give them away as the case may seem to require. Important results will follow.”  {Review and Herald, June 10, 1880}
