Why Not Try This? …Ask God for a Bold Vision for 2008

If you could ask God for something specific to happen in your district by the end of 2008, what would it be? Would your request center around buildings, the church school, young people, souls won, members mobilized in ministry or something else?

During the last few weeks I have intensified my prayer life, spent additional unhurried time in Bible study and reflection, talked with Godly leaders and asked God to help me. The Lord has clarified in my mind where to put my greatest efforts during this coming year here in the NPUC. We have about 93,000 members and more than 13 million people to share the Adventist message with.

It almost seems outrageous to share but I will. During 2008 I will work with conference leaders, churches, schools, institutions, pastors, teachers, lay leaders and young people to mobilize…

  • FOR EACH HARVEST CYCLE (January-June & July-December)
    • 40,000 Prayer Warriors
    • 4,000 Bible Study and/or Outreach Groups
    • 400 Local and/or Satellite Reaping Meetings
    • 2,000 People prepared for uniting with the Adventist movement

Is this possible? Not humanly. Is it in harmony with God’s will? Definitely.

Consider His commands and counsel–

  • Mark 9:29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
  • 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
  • Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
  • Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
  • Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
  • Philemon 1:6 I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.
  • Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
  • Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
  • John 4:35 Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

With this bold vision in mind I am better able to plan my schedule, make budget requests and identify people to pray with and work with. And even if we do not see this accomplished in 2008, at least I can make steady progress in the right direction once I have a clear, bold vision. Having a bold vision also helps me live above the trivial and mundane and focus on the kingdom of God and His righteousness each week (Matthew 6:25-34).

As the Lord has clarified this vision for me, I have been reminded that Satan is also in the “bold vision” business. The visions he gives are an effort to get leaders to make a name for themselves (Genesis 11:4- Tower of Babel), take credit and power that belongs only to God (Daniel 4:30- Nebuchadnezzar) or seek to accomplish something in a way that is out of harmony with Bible teachings (Matthew 4:1-10- The Temptations of Jesus in the wilderness). I must remember that not only the vision but the motives and methods must be clearly in harmony with the principles of God’s Word.

“Success in any line demands a definite aim. He who would achieve true success in life must keep steadily in view the aim worthy of his endeavor. Such an aim is set before the youth of today. The heaven-appointed purpose of giving the gospel to the world in this generation is the noblest that can appeal to any human being. It opens a field of effort to everyone whose heart Christ has touched.”  {Education p. 262.1}

I encourage you to think of how many people need to be reached with the Adventist message in your circle of responsibility and how many Adventist members you have as your potential helpers. Why not ask God to give you a clear, crisp and compelling vision of what He wants to have happen in your district during 2008 and what your role should be, something startling enough to capture the attention and energies of your elders, church leaders and members?

Blessings to you,

Dan Serns
